 A Month in Review
at Snow School

Dear Grade K – 5 families –
I am hoping that this weekend’s mild weather brought you and your family some time to get outdoors and take in the fresh air and get some exercise, too. I also hope that all members of your family are doing well.

Last week marked our first official week of online learning for all students and families. Teachers and staff were excited to use the See Saw or Google Classroom platforms as a means of reaching out to your child/children and begin engagement efforts with virtual tools. Through this interaction, I hope that you were able to set up a schedule and routine for yourself and your family that works best in your house. I also hope that you and your family had time to discuss online etiquette, expectations, and rules for use. Lastly, I hope that you know how to best communicate with your child’s/children’s teachers. We will continue this “soft launch” to support you and your child/children become more familiar with how to use the platform provided, better understand teacher expectations, and to provide you with additional time to structure your home and routines to support learning online.

My staff and I want to thank all the families that came out to watch our parade last Monday. You helped energize us and reminded us to stay strong, utilize a growth mindset and trudge into this past week with confidence as we were forced to change how we performed professionally and personally. Here are a few pictures of what turned out to be a day we will forever hold in our hearts.

Dear Preschool Families,

I am hoping that this weekend’s mild weather brought you and your family some time to get outdoors, take in the fresh air and get some exercise, too.  I also hope that all members of your family are doing well.

Last week, the Distance Learning Plan was shared with the Middletown Community. The plan detailed what virtual learning will look like during this transition period for our students. At the Pre-K level, the district has identified Seesaw as the age appropriate learning platform on which our teachers will be conducting distance learning for our youngest learners. This past week, all preschool families were contacted by classroom teachers to determine digital device needs. Based on this information, the district has ordered iPads to ensure that all families without access have a device. Once devices are available, we will begin to transition our preschool families and teachers into using this teaching and learning management system that is developmentally appropriate, easy to navigate, and meets the academic needs of our early learners.

Preschool teachers are currently using email to communicate with and provide families with activities that foster the development of skills through a hands-on, active approach that supports literacy, math, fine and gross motor, and social emotional learning. Families are encouraged to experiment with on-and-offline activities for learning, such as read alouds and book sharing, outdoor exploration, and free play. Daily engagement in the Footsteps to Brilliance online learning program is recommended, as well.

Additionally, Mrs. Larson and I were able to secure grant money that has afforded us to create care packages for our preschoolers.  These packages will contain items and materials necessary for completion of “hands-on” activities that are assigned each week.
